Shelter Island House

This waterfront house is composed of classically detailed modern forms that evoke a Roman seaside villa. Composed of identifiable geometric parts, it appears as a village set in the woods, its geometry mediating the site's competing natural elements. The barrel-vaulted roof of the living room and the pediment of the master bedroom tower underscore the verticality of the surrounding forest and the sky, while the children's wing with its low-pitched room echoes the horizontal sweep of rolling lawn, beach, and water.
