The Jennings

This recently completed 54,000-square-foot development in the Crotona Park East neighborhood of the Bronx provides secure housing for victims of domestic violence and their children. The 42 generously proportioned apartments range in size from 600-square-foot one-bedroom units, 800-square-foot two-bedroom units, and 1,100-square-foot three-bedroom units.

The nine-story building stands on a midblock property that faces a three-way intersection. The L-shaped plan maximizes the number of units and leaves open space for a front garden. Clad in modular bricks in two tones, the facades also feature window grilles in pastel colors inspired by Andy Warhol’s Flower paintings, which add a cheerful, upbeat note.

The design complies with Enterprise Green Community standards by incorporating a green roof, sustainable materials, Energy Star appliances, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Tenant safety is also a primary concern. Security features include electronic access entry, CCTV, video intercom, and a constantly staffed security desk. Additional tenant amenities include stroller storage, a laundry, computer room, and a library as well as a second garden and play yard at the rear of the building.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter visited this exact site to witness the destruction of the South Bronx (see final photo). We are proud to be part of the meaningful renewal of this formerly devastated neighborhood.
