The renovation and design of this new sanctuary expands the worship space of a New Jersey Conservative congregation that has outgrown its original 1950s facility. The fractured form of the Sanctuary, derived from a simple, iterative manipulation of the Star of David, provides a dynamic counterpoint to the more restrained, flat-roofed adjoining building. The addition creates three new classrooms and a common room for the synagogue’s nursery school. A new ground level entrance for the school allows for the separation of the institution’s religious and educational programs. Reconfiguring the existing Sanctuary, a new social hall was created providing additional seating for high-holiday services. A new lobby improves circulation and creates a grand entry into the expanded space.
