Memphis Home

Occupying a narrow lot on a leafy suburban street, this “Charleston” type, modern family house takes inspiration from classical Italian conception of building inwards rather than out. The house extends its communal living spaces into an enclosed garden oasis, creating a private and peaceful haven, in contrast to neighboring houses that are focused toward the street. Composed of simple geometric forms that emphasize height over width, the composition explores the relationship between inside and outside. The garden court, at the heart of the house, is surrounded by the kitchen, living areas and master bedroom on the first level and guest bedrooms above. Within the tower, above the master bedroom, is the observatory for watching stars, galaxies and the comet that may graze perilously close to Earth.
