Newhouse Apartment by
Alexander Gorlin Architects

This renovation combines two adjacent apartments to create an expansive gallery for the contemporary art collection of S.I. and Victoria Newhouse. While the exterior of the building is Miesian, the interior of the apartment was bereft of rational order. To better organize the interior, new columns were added and existing ones extended to create a grid that parallels the exterior mullion system. Deep piers at the window reflect light into the room and anchor the open loft-like space with bronze and sycamore radiator cabinets. As one emerges from the entry vestibule, glimpses of the skyline are striking and encourage visitors into the gallery where the full length of the colonnade reveals commanding views.
